The Québec government has committed to devoting 50% of the territory covered by the Plan Nord to protecting the environment, safeguarding biodiversity, sustaining the natural heritage and developing various types of non-industrial activities by 2035.
Announced on May 9, 2011 by Québec Premier Jean Charest, the Plan Nord is one of the largest economic, social and environmental development projects of our era and will extend over a 25-year period.
The Plan Nord’s environmental component includes protecting 50% of the land surface or approximately 600,000 km2 of its territory. Six broad guidelines were adopted in February, 2012 and a new Bill was tabled in the Québec National Assembly on April 17, 2012.
